We define sustainable restaurants as restaurants that are making an active commitment to being more sustainable, by addressing issues and activities that fall into our 14 areas of sustainability. We want to help as many restaurants as possible be more sustainable, so we've tried to keep our Membership Terms and Conditions and Membership Fees simple – and flexible enough to cater for independent restaurants and chains. In exchange we offer a wide range of exclusive Membership Benefits.
Become a Member
To be a Restaurant Member you need to commit to at least three Key Actions from our Charter of Actions, one from each of our three sustainability categories: Sourcing, Environment and Society. These should be new actions, something you’re not already doing. When you’ve chosen three Key Actions that you can commit to, write them on your Pledge, sign it and send it back to us. We’ll then send you a “We’re at the table” Membership certificate that you can display in your restaurant along with your Sustainable Restaurant Association Member Window Sticker and logo.
When you sign your Pledge you’ll see that we also ask you to embrace and operate according to our Values, commit to becoming increasingly sustainable across your business and recognise that sustainability is an ongoing process. To this effect, you’ll need to commit to three more Key Actions each year to renew your Membership. Plus our Charter also includes a topic by topic list of Suggested Actions.
You don’t have to commit to our Suggested Actions, but we encourage you to do as many of them as you can. More is definitely more in this case! Plus the more actions you do, the greater chance you have of achieving our ultimate sustainability award: Champion Accreditation status. We encourage all our Members to strive for that goal.

Take sustainability further with a full Audit
We can award Gold, Silver or Bronze Accreditation to restaurants that sign up for a full sustainability Audit. They get to flag up their status with Our Mark on windows, on marketing material, in Partner Guides and in our Restaurant Directory. We also offer cross-promotion and encourage restaurants to be Regional Champions.
Customers can become members too, by signing up to be "Friends of the SRA". Customers can locate sustainable restaurants through our Restaurant Directory, interact with Members and sustainable experts at Events, stay up-to-date with the Latest News and draw on our "Friends of the SRA" resources to help them encourage restaurants to be even more sustainable.
If everyone works together, we have a better chance of increasing sustainability in restaurants across the whole of the UK – and the more sustainable restaurants we have, the better for people, the planet and for profit.
