What is sustainability?

Sustainability is about a business managing not only the financial but also the social and environmental impact of its operations. By taking sustainable action, restaurants can make a huge difference on issues such as climate change, animal welfare and food waste...

There are many ways of catergorising sustainable issues for a restaurant. We divide it into three: Sourcing, Environment and Society. This covers 14 key activity areas (below). Our research shows that dividing sustainability up into easily digestible, topical portions can really help restaurants focus on issues, set targets and action change.

We know restaurants can be busy places. It’s not always easy for them to access the right information, in the given time. That’s why – with the help of our fantastic Advisory Board and Sustainability Experts – we’ve put all the entry-level information Member restaurants need to take action, in one place. We're trawling the web so that our Members don't have to!

We hope restaurant customers will be equally inspired to be more sustainable when eating out and at home. Customers can join us too, as “Friends of the SRA”.
