Halfway through the photoshoot, Raymond Blanc turned to his dinner guest and said: “I’ve had thousands of dinners, but never one quite like this.” While the SRA President and Michelin Star chef was almost certainly referring to the unusual nature of his guest – a life size panda – he might just as easily have been referring to the very special dining occasion that is fast approaching – Earth Hour.
We’re delighted to report that swathes of SRA Members are signing up to host candlelit dinners on the evening of 19 March and many are putting the finishing touches to special menus or dishes to serve customers on the night.
With more than five weeks to go until the lights go out around the world, you’ve still got time to sign up to the biggest annual celebration of the planet. And while the emphasis is on the candles, we’re not asking you to turn out all the lights in the restaurant – that would be madness!! Light the candles and turn the lights down low or off in the main restaurant, but by all means keep them on in the kitchen, hallways and bathrooms etc.
University colleges, conference centres, restaurant groups, independent cafes, pubs and fine dining restaurants are all switching on to this great opportunity to show your customers you care and help raise awareness about the environment.
Working with our partners at WWF, we’ll be sending out all participating businesses a pack of goodies to help promote the event. WWF will also highlight all participating restaurants on its website – as will we on the Food Made Good site.
As well as running a #CandelitDinner, you might like to create ‘Earth Hour Dishes / Menus’ – challenging chefs to create and promote dishes and special menus that reflect your restaurant’s own interpretation of sustainability, and tie into WWF’s Livewell principles. Or you could hold a ‘chef’s table’ type event, talking through the wonderful Earth Hour dish being prepared whilst giving a talk on sustainability and answering questions from customers. This can include talking through the challenges and opportunities to cook something truly sustainable without sacrificing deliciousness
We are also asking Members who are going to create Earth Hour Dishes for the event to provide these to us in advance so we and WWF can promote the recipes widely on social media to engage diners. And there’s the chance for those dining out by candlelight at a participating restaurant to win a dinner for two* at their favourite sustainable restaurant by submitting their photographs of their meal and the event with the hashtag #CandleLitDinner on Twitter and Instagram.
Almost 10 million people in the UK participated in Earth Hour last year and together with WWF we are really hoping to top the 10m mark in 2016. You can help us hit that target.
Do please let your Account Manager know if you’ll be serving candlelit dinners and we can then be sure to provide you with everything you need to let your customers know you’re in!
