London pubs a destination for veggie diners
It’s National Vegetarian Week 21- 27 May, and we’ve great news for vegetarians and vegans visiting two of London’s favourite pubs.
London is usually (though not always accurately!) seen as leading the rest of the country when it comes to many things, the restaurant scene being one. The capital has, however, been lagging behind when it comes to catering for vegetarians and vegans who fancy some grub when in the pub. There are around 16 vegetarian pubs in the country, writes the Guardian’s Oliver Thring, but until now, none in London.
Step forward two SRA Members The Smithfield Tavern and Norman’s Coach and Horses. Says owner Alistair Choate: ’We are very proud to be the first London pubs to switch to a vegetarian and vegan menu. We feel that offering food that is better for our environment and customers is a vital first step towards becoming a more sustainable business.’
He adds, ‘We believe that the modern issue of sustainability can sit hand-in-hand with the old-style values of ‘boozers’ such as the Coach & Horses and Smithfield Tavern. Our customers can still enjoy top quality pub grub in the traditional surroundings they know and love, with the reassurance that the food they are eating is not only better for them, but also the planet.’
